Planning a paragliding trip abroad: what to organise

Updated October 14, 2026

A good paragliding trip is a mix of the right place, the right season and enough flexibility to wait for weather.

1. Choose destination and season

Pick a site that matches your skill (see our flying site guides). Research typical wind, thermals and monsoon or cold seasons.

2. Paperwork

  • A valid pilot licence or rating from your association, and a logbook.
  • Insurance covering paragliding in the destination country, including medical evacuation.
  • Check local regulations, airspace and any visitor fees or registration with local clubs.

3. Gear and airline luggage

  • Wings are heavy; check baggage allowance and fees in advance. A paraglider with harness commonly weighs around 15–20 kg.
  • Pack the wing in a protective bag, deflate fully, and keep the reserve in carry-on if allowed.
  • Consider renting equipment locally if it saves excess baggage costs.

4. Local knowledge

Contact a local school, club or guide to get a site briefing. They know wind patterns, landing options and hazards.

5. Packing list

Helmet, harness, wing, reserve, vario / phone, radio, gloves, boots, layers, sun protection, repair kit, spare lines or tape, first aid kit, water.

6. Build in margin

Plan more days than you need: weather decides how many flying days you get.
