Rio de Janeiro offers one of the world’s most iconic urban flights: take off from Pedra Bonita (about 500 m above sea level) and land on Praia do Pepino in São Conrado, beneath Pedra da Gávea and the Tijuca forest.

Season

Flying is possible year round, but the drier months (roughly April to September) have more stable, flyable days. Summer brings heat, rain and thunderstorms.

Flying notes

  • Launch is a ramp with a steep approach. Wind direction and strength matter: use local advice.
  • The Pepino landing field is shared with beach users; follow marked approach lanes.
  • Strong coastal wind and rotor behind the rocks can occur.
  • Commercial tandem flights are common, so pay attention to traffic.

For visiting pilots

Brazil has an organised paragliding federation and local clubs. Check local requirements and insurance before flying and consider hiring a local guide for a briefing.
