Queenstown, on Lake Wakatipu, is one of New Zealand’s adventure-sports capitals, and paragliding is a signature activity. Flights above the lake with the Remarkables range in view are a popular tandem experience, and the region around Queenstown and Wanaka is also used by solo pilots.

Season

Because New Zealand is in the southern hemisphere, the best flying is generally in summer (December to March) with stable shoulder months on either side. Winter is cold and the days are short, though clear days can be spectacular.

Typical conditions

  • Mountain weather changes quickly. Strong westerly winds and rapidly developing fronts are common.
  • Thermals can be strong on warm summer afternoons.
  • Clear regulatory framework: New Zealand has a national association with pilot ratings and rules; follow them.

Practical notes

  1. Local briefing: use a local school or club to learn about wind, landing zones and any restrictions.
  2. Weather windows: bring a flexible schedule; wind can shut down flying for days.
  3. Insurance: check that your cover is valid for paragliding in New Zealand.
  4. Dress for cold: even in summer, the high launches can be chilly.

Combine it with

Hiking, skiing in winter, and the many outdoor activities across the Southern Lakes.
