The Owens Valley, along the eastern Sierra Nevada in California, is among the best-known high-desert cross-country locations in the world. Long ridgelines, a deep valley and strong thermals have produced record-setting flights.

Season

Late spring through early autumn gives the best thermal conditions. Summer afternoons can be extreme; pilots usually fly early in the day.

What makes it special

  • Very high cloudbase and long distances along the valley.
  • Several established sites reachable by road, including the well-known Walt’s Point and Horseshoe Meadows launches.
  • A strong, experienced local community.

Hazards

  • Strong, rough thermals and powerful rotor in the lee of the mountains.
  • Desert heat, high elevation and rapid weather changes.
  • Remote landing options: carry a radio, phone, water and a plan for retrieval.

Who is it for?

This is advanced flying. Intermediate pilots should go with local mentors or guided groups, and should respect the local flying rules and pilot ratings.
